Everybody loves a good ol’ BBQ gathering.
I am no different than you and love all the traditional dishes too: potato salad, burgers, chips and salsa, pasta salad, etc.
While we know BBQ’s don’t usually hold the award for most nutritious – there are lots of healthy options we can bring or smarter choices we can make that still allows us to enjoy the BBQ without negatively impacting our health.
12 Ways to Eat Healthy at a BBQ
- Skip the white bun and opt for a whole grain bun instead. Bonus: It will fill you up faster.
- Choose a healthier condiment, like mustard, only add a little ketchup or mayo if you really have to.
- Make it a hamburger and skip the cheese. Bonus: You’ll save around 100 calories.
- Skip high calorie sides and choose to fill up on veggies instead.
- Instead of alcohol, pop or juice – choose water. Bonus: You’ll prevent the sugar rush (and subsequent crash).
- Don’t stand around the food table. Serve your plate and then go find a place to sit and eat.
- Choose lean proteins like chicken or fish. Bonus: Fish makes you smarter!
- Load up your burger with all kinds of veggies to add flavor and bulk.
- Never show up hungry. Bonus: It’s easier to make smarter food choices if you aren’t starving.
- Keep dessert to a sample size, not a meal size.
- Always bring a vegetable platter, always. Bonus: You will always have a healthy option.
- Hydrate before, during and after.
If that’s not enough, you can always serve up these delicious (and healthy!) Teriyaki Chicken Kabobs at your next BBQ.
