Have you noticed your probiotics giving you gas lately?
If your gas is getting more frequent, smellier, or more painful – then your probiotics could be to blame.
Did you notice that you got gassier after starting that new probiotic? Which is weird because it’s an expensive one! It’s full of billions of bacteria and dozens of different strains.
It should be helping, amiiiiright?
Or since starting that probiotic your gas has become unbearably painful. Even the smell is terrible. It seems strange because you started taking it to improve your gut health.
Now it’s gotten worse!
Changes to your gut microbiome can produce excess gas. Yes, it’s possible that your probiotics might be making things worse.
So are your probiotics pointless? Let’s dig into this a little deeper …
Problem #1: Addressing Your Needs
I’m sure you would benefit from a probiotic, but it can be tricky to choose the right one.
Which probiotic you take is dependent on your individual needs. Taking the wrong probiotic can make your symptoms worse, or provide no benefit at all. What a waste of money!
It’s important to talk to your nutritionist before choosing a probiotic. We assess your health and choose a probiotic that addresses your specific needs.
PROBLEM #2: Choosing the Wrong Strain
Some probiotics have dozens of different strains of bacteria. And some of them may not be right for you.
Did you know each one serves a different purpose and benefit? While one may be beneficial to someone else, it could be harmful for you.
Understanding the terrain of your gut and comparing it to your needs is important. That helps me determine which probiotic strain for you is the safest and most effective.
PROBLEM #3: Watching for Additives
Many probiotics contain prebiotics called FOS (Fructooligosaccharides). It’s used to help feed your bacteria and keep them healthy.
But if you’re taking probiotics for gut health issues, there’s a high chance you’re reacting to the FOS.
FOS added to probiotics is almost always chemically manufactured. It also feeds the bacteria at such a quick rate that it can lead to bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and gas.
So, are you right to be worried that your probiotics are pointless? If you’re not seeing benefits from taking them, then I’d say yes.
But if you’ve noticed an increase in symptoms I’d be bold enough to say they’re actually a problem.
This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be taking a probiotic. In fact, I’d say the opposite! Your digestive issues show that your gut needs a little TLC.
The right probiotic could support your healing protocol and safely reduce your symptoms.
