Finding the time to sit down and read isn’t always easy.
Right now, you’re spending more time at home than usual, but that doesn’t mean you have more time. You may be working from home, have kids at home, have projects to complete, or you may be struggling to get out of bed and face the day.
At a time like this, I find escaping into a book a great form of self-care. Getting 30 minutes of quiet time to myself to learn, imagine, laugh, cry, or grow is something that’s bringing some calm into the chaos and concerns.
If you’re with me, then I know you’re equally as excited to dive into this month’s book. But before we do, let’s have quick chat about last month’s book!
THE ONE-POT ALKALINE DIET COOKBOOK – MY THOUGHTS
First of all, I get that this is a cookbook and that I authored the book.
I recommended this book for March because it helps bring an understanding to the alkaline diet and how it can be beneficial to your health. Because the alkaline diet is based around plant-based foods, it’s worth understanding why you should incorporate more of these nutrient-dense foods into your diet.
If you haven’t ordered your copy of the book, you can do so here.
Here are my answers to the discussion points:
- What’s your initial reaction to this book? Are you excited to read it, nervous, or not interested? Why or why not?
Not applicable. - What was your favourite quote or passage?
“The foods you eat have a direct impact on how you feel.” - What’s one new thing you learned?
I was an advocate for the alkaline diet prior to writing the book, but in researching and reading its scientific literature, I learned the most accurate way to determine a foods acidity or alkalinity was through its potential renal acid load. - Name one thing you already knew that came as no surprise.
That your body doesn’t need food to maintain its pH balance, it can do that on its own. Food helps ease the burden of managing acidity, which is super important for your health. - What’s one major takeaway you got from this book that you’re going to apply to your life?
All 100 recipes … we make several of them each week because they’re so easy and we all love them!
I’m super curious to hear your thoughts on my book and discuss it with you. You can email me your answers to the discussion questions and well chat!
BUGS, BOWELS, AND BEHAVIOR
By Teri Arranga, Claire I. Viadro, and Lauren Underwood
About this book
Even though the title may not sound appealing, this book takes a deep dive into how the bacteria in your gut impact every area of your body – helping explain the incredibly fascinating world of the gut-brain connection.
Why I’m reading it
This book has been on my “to read list” for awhile. I’ve worked in the field of gut health for several years, and I’m still fascinated by the gut-brain connection. I’m excited to read this book to dig deeper into the world of how the food you eat impacts the brain through its impact on your gut. This area of health never gets boring!

Important notes
As a reminder, the books I’ll be recommending each month do not necessarily reflect my beliefs or the way I practice nutrition. This is simply a way for us to open up conversation about what’s out there to discuss it’s validity and truth.
This is not sponsored or promoted and I have no affiliation with the author. Any opinions expressed are my own.

Next month I’ll be bringing you a whole new book, with a full review of Bugs, Bowels, and Behavior. I’d love to hear your thoughts too!
