We’re over halfway through the nutrition book club!
In January of this year, I set out to read 20 books in 2020. As lame as it sounds, I didn’t think it was possible with my busy schedule.
I’ve always loved reading though, but haven’t made the time since kids and while running my business. So I committed to a little self-care this year.
And now here I am, halfway through and right on target with my reading. Not only that, I’m loving reading a nutrition book club selection with you monthly and finishing off with a book just for entertainment.
Honestly, it’s been the most fulfilling form of self-care I’ve done in a long time. It’s encouraged me to focus on a little me time each day and I’m not mad about it.
Now with Summer here, you may find it easier or maybe even harder to continue this journey with me. But, I hope you’ll continue. It will do us both some good to keep learning and growing this season!
So let’s discuss June’s nutrition book club selection before moving on to July’s …
MOLECULES OF EMOTION – MY THOUGHTS
I have to admit that I found this book super interesting. Not so much for the information, though there was some interesting stuff in there too. More out of interest for Candace’s story.
I wanted to learn what her research uncovered and how she overcame obstacles, which is why I was so engaged. In the end, I didn’t learn as much as I had hoped, but there were a few interesting tidbits I got from this book.
Would I recommend it? Probably not. But again, there was some interesting research, though most of it was already familiar to me.
Here are my answers to the discussion points:
- What’s your initial reaction to this book? Are you excited to read it, nervous, or not interested? Why or why not? I was super excited to read this book because it was about a subject I don’t focus on. However, I was also nervous because it was out of my scope of practice. But I love learning!
- What was your favourite quote or passage? “Absence of proof is not proof of absence.”
- What’s one new thing you learned? The immune cells are making the same chemicals we conceive of as controlling mood in the brain.
- Name one thing you already knew that came as no surprise. The observer (YOU!) plays an important role in defining reality.
- What’s one major takeaway you got from this book that you’re going to apply to your life? Honestly, it’s less about what I’ll apply to nutrition and more to my life. I loved watching how Candace pushed through adversity with passion and conviction. That’s what life is truly like when you work in complimentary medicine. That’s definitely my personality, but I want to make sure I continue being as vocal as she was!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this book and discuss it with you. You can email me your answers to the discussion questions and we’ll chat!
The China Study
By T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. and Thomas M. Campbell II, M.D.
About this book
This book is considered to be one of the most comprehensive studies ever conducted on health and nutrition.
It helps break down the science behind how a healthy diet can prevent disease. And while I know you don’t want to think about the long-term implications of your choices now – you really need to.
Why I’m reading it
It’s a huge and comprehensive deep-dive on nutrition, specifically the plant-based diet.
While I’m not vegetarian per say, nor do I label myself, I’ve never been a huge meat eater. Since becoming a nutritionist, I’ve gravitated towards a more plant-based diet.
I know many well-known and popular nutritionists boast the importance of meat, but I haven’t found a lot of solid information backing that up quite yet, so I continue with a healthy and moderate balance between the two.
Let’s be honest, science is always changing when it comes to nutrition.
I’m looking forward to hearing the science and insight behind this book!
