There’s something so cozy about curling up on the couch at the end of the day with a good book. It’s even better if you can wear your comfiest clothes, wrapped up in a blanket, with a glass of red wine (err, hot tea??).
But what I love even more is that I get to discuss the books I’m reading with you and hear your thoughts as well!
This month’s book was an interesting one and I definitely have some thoughts on it … I can’t wait to hear yours.
THE DIRT CURE – MY THOUGHTS
Dr. Maya is brilliant in the topic of children’s health in this book.
While I really appreciated her science-backed thoughts and approach on this topic, her discussions on the body’s “terrain”, and the significance of gut health, I found myself a little put off by many statements that made me feel like I’d already failed as a parent (for instance, one twin was born via c-section). There was something about her approach that I didn’t like.
With that being said – she’s blunt, honest, and a big advocate for making individual changes for your child’s individual health needs – and I totally dig that.
Practically, I’m not sure many people can go to the far extremes that she preaches, but I think there’s lots of great information in there that could help most people take small steps towards big results.
Ultimately I thought the book was solid and informative.
Here are my answers to the discussion points:
- What’s your initial reaction to this book? Are you excited to read it, nervous, or not interested? Why or why not?
I’m interested in reading this book to hear Maya’s thoughts on children’s nutrition. But, practitioners can be all over the map so I’m slightly nervous as to what her views might be. I’m hoping there’s good evidence to help back up her claims. - What was your favourite quote or passage?
“Every symptom happens for a reason.” - What’s one new thing you learned?
Between 1997 and 2011, food allergies in children rose by 50 percent…One study showed that 10 percent of children raised in an urban environment developed a food allergy to eggs, milk, or peanuts by age five and that 55 percent would develop food sensitivity. - Name one thing you already knew that came as no surprise.
Most of us consider food reactivity to be relevant only to children afflicted with spontaneous hives or anaphylaxis. But every child’s health, mood, and behaviour can be affected by food…Very real, serious reactions to food manifest in children’s guts, skin, lungs, and nervous systems, though many parents and physicians don’t recognize these symptoms as food reactions. - What’s one major takeaway you got from this book that you’re going to apply to your life?
I need to learn how to grow my own food (I suck at gardening … send help!).
I’m super curious to hear your answers and discuss the book with you! You can email me your answers here.
THE ONE-POT ALKALINE DIET COOKBOOK
By Sharisse Dalby, RNC NNCP
About this book
Call me lame … but I’m totally recommending my own book for this months book club! While I know it’s a cookbook, it does a great job at explaining what the alkaline diet is and how to use it to improve your health. It’s a quick read – but absolutely worth it.
This book releases next week, on March 10th, 2020 – but you can pre-order your copy here (or download the ebook version to start reading today!).
Why I’m reading it
Not only am I excited to go through this with you and hear your thoughts, but once you’re done reading it you get to benefit from all you’ve learned with 100 one-pot alkaline recipes. I don’t know about you, but I’m all about books with benefits!

Important notes
As a reminder, the books I’ll be recommending each month do not necessarily reflect my beliefs or the way I practice nutrition. This is simply a way for us to open up conversation about what’s out there to discuss it’s validity and truth.
Stay tuned
Next month I’ll be bringing you a whole new book, with a full review of The One-Pot Alkaline Diet Cookbook and my thoughts (this should be interesting!!). I’d love to hear your thoughts too!
