Do you find nutrition overwhelming?
You’re not alone. As interesting as it is, it’s a big topic that’s not easy to break down.
It’s also a fluid field. As a society we’re always learning new information and dispelling old claims.
Always changing and so exciting.
But also overwhelming.
That’s why as a nutritionist I did several years of schooling to get to where I am. I also spend hours researching, and even more hours in courses to keep up with the latest information.
Not to mention the countless hours with clients. This is where I gained experience of how nutrition really plays out in someone’s life.
While experience tops it all, learning is still an important part of growth in general. So I keep learning.
Nutrition is also a very fascinating thing to study.
That’s why I started this book club! To let you join me on my journey through learning and opening up discussion so you can understand it too.
Let’s break down last month’s book, and then I’ll announce this months book.
BUGS, BOWELS, AND BEHAVIOR – MY THOUGHTS
This was one of the most incredible books I’ve read in awhile.
Very scientific (sorry about that), but with solid proof in study and practice. I found lots of valuable information in it and a few good ah-ha moments, too.
Here are my answers to the discussion points:
- What’s your initial reaction to this book? Are you excited to read it, nervous, or not interested? Why or why not? I was excited to read the book because I love anything related to the gut and behaviour.
- What was your favourite quote or passage? “The intricacy of the gut flora means that just taking a probiotic and “calling it a day” is generally insufficient for the maintenance of intestinal health.” I had so many AMENS to that statement.
- What’s one new thing you learned? That high levels of phenylalanine may also cause a drop in serotonin and/or GABA, which may result in obsessive-compulsive disorder behaviours.
- Name one thing you already knew that came as no surprise. That the gut impacts the brain just as much as the brain impacts the gut. It’s bi-directional!
- What’s one major takeaway you got from this book that you’re going to apply to your life? To never stop looking at the health of the gut first!
I’d love to hear your thoughts on this book and discuss it with you. You can email me your answers to the discussion questions and we’ll chat!

About this book
What could be better than a book completely about the microbes in your body? Okay, I know I’m a nerd that way. But this book covers how your microbes influence your body and I’m all about that. From your weight, to your immune system, to mental health, and your probability for disease. It covers it all!
Why I’m reading it
I promise to switch it up next month. But the impact of the balance of your gut microbiome on your health is a fascinating topic. I work in gut health because I’m passionate about it!
I’ve seen clients conquer food sensitivities, indigestion, and sleep by improving gut health. Also hormones, OCD, and food cravings by balancing their microbiota.
So I keep reading to make sure I know how to make the biggest impact for the greatest gains in your health.
