Celery Snack 3 Ways by Nutritionist Sharisse Dalby

Is a daily glass of celery juice actually good for you?

According to various health claims from the more than 102,000 instagram posts related to #celeryjuice – it sure is!

In fact, if you drink a glass of celery juice every morning on an empty stomach, you could heal yourself from almost anything according to the claims.

HEALTH CLAIMS OF CELERY JUICE

Let’s start by taking a look at the supposed health benefits of a daily glass of celery juice, according to Dr. Google:

  • Acne
  • Hashimoto’s
  • Eczema + Psoriasis
  • Celiac Disease
  • Irritable Bowel Disease
  • Diabetes
  • Depression, Anxiety, and PTSD
  • Cancer
  • Alzheimer’s Disease
  • ADHD
  • Leaky Gut
  • Acid Reflux
  • And so on …

Sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? That’s because it is.

As a nutritionist I work by evidence-based science only, and knowing that each of these health issues present themselves differently and requires different care, these claims were raising a big red flag.

So I decided to go back to the original source, and guess what I didn’t find? I didn’t find that it was started by a naturopathic physician, a nutritionist, or even a trained and registered healthcare practitioner of any sort – it was started by some random dude who made a claim without any evidence to back it up.

Welcome to the “global celery movement”, folks.

While I refuse to give him any more attention by linking to his stuff, you need to know that nowhere does he link to any studies or prove any of his claims.

Because he didn’t bother to give you any evidence, I thought I’d pull up my sleeves and do the dirty work for him. Should we see what the evidence actually says?

WHAT THE EVIDENCE ACTUALLY SAYS ABOUT CELERY JUICE

Celery is in fact healthy, obviously, because it’s still a green vegetable – making it low in calories and high in nutrients.

It’s a well known source of fibre which helps with digestion, water and potassium to aid in hydration, and nutrients like vitamin K, molybdenum, folate, vitamin C, and magnesium.

It has been shown that celery contains antioxidants, which is important for fighting off free radicals and reducing inflammation.

That’s it.

It’s not a cure-all or magic pill, it’s a vegetable. Enjoy it in moderation alongside plenty of other fruits and vegetables and you’ll be well on your way to a healthier life – no juicer required.

THE VERDICT ON CELERY JUICE

All in all, there’s nothing wrong with enjoying plenty of celery or even celery juice if you are looking to re-hydrate and get your fill of nutrients (but keep in mind that juicing does remove the fibre).

But it won’t magically solve all of your health problems.

If you’re struggling with any of the symptoms or health issues that celery juice claims to fix, avoid the health fad and chat with me first so we can get you on the right path to healing and health.
