COVID brought my cravings back 😳
Well, not directly, but indirectly. It happened through added stress, anxiety, and the lack of sleep that came with it.
I didn’t like that familiar feeling. And sugar addictions are a tough one, too.
But, like I’ve said time and time again, cravings are an outward sign of an inward problem.
I eliminated my severe cravings years ago by looking inward. I dug in to discover my imbalances and did the work to re-balance them.
So the moment I felt my cravings creeping back in – I knew what I needed to do.
That’s the benefit of understanding your body and its natural tendencies. Because your health will always have ebbs and flows. Knowing how it responds allows you to adjust and be preventative.
I’d love to help you learn how to do that, too, just like I did.
If you’re stumbling your way through cravings, then it’s probably time. Let me help you take the next step! I’ve just opened space in my 3-month Curb Cravings Nutrition Package and it would be perfect for you.
This is not a restrictive diet (I know Summer is coming, don’t worry!) and it’s not going to take over your life. It’s simply learning how your habits and lifestyle are affecting your health, so you can pivot and support your body for balance – forever!
For example, adjusting your nutrition to balance deficiencies can be super effective in eliminating cravings. Here are some foods that can be helpful:
Apples
Blood sugar imbalance is a common cause of cravings. Nutrition Reviews explains the importance of fibre and its help in insulin sensitivity. Apples are a good source of fiber and low-glycemic too.
Berries
The antioxidants in berries, polyphenols, are prebiotics. They create food for the healthy bacteria in your gut. This helps keep your gut bacteria balanced, which in turns prevents cravings.
Avocado
Magnesium is a great relaxant and avocados are a great source. For that reason, it may help reduce stress and improve sleep, according to a study published by Nutrients. Also, most people are deficient in magnesium so it’s a good place to start.
Leafy Greens
A craving is often a sign of a nutritional imbalance. Leafy greens are full of a variety of vitamins and minerals. Consuming them daily may help balance deficiencies. A study in Neurogoly talks about the benefits of them for brain health, too.
Chia Seeds
While chia seeds are a great source of healthy fats, they’re also high in protein. According to a 2014 study in Nutrition Journal, a high-protein breakfast reduces cravings. It’s affects can last throughout the entire day!
Nut and seeds
Both nuts and seeds contain polyphenols and dietary fibre. They act as prebiotics to the gut microbiota. Basically, they feed the healthy bacteria in your gut and help it grow and stay in charge. This may eliminate cravings.
Chickpeas
A study in Journal of Food Science and Technology, found chickpeas beneficial, too. They help reduce blood glucose levels and food intake after consumption. They’re also satiating and a good source of fibre.
Eggs
A great source of healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and protein. Eggs can help with satiety and balancing blood sugar levels. They can also help balance out nutrient deficiencies. If your cravings come in the evenings, an egg a couple hours after dinner may help!
Greek Yogurt
Fermented foods containing live bacteria culture can be extremely beneficial for your health. They add good bacteria back in to foster a healthy gut microbiome. Yogurt, kombucha, miso, kefir, and sauerkraut are some popular options. This balances the gut bacteria which can prevent cravings.
Dark Chocolate
Real chocolate, raw cacao, has many nutritious properties. One is that it contains serotonin and other endorphins that regulate reward and mood. It also contains tyrosine, the precursor to dopamine which helps with mood. Cravings are sometimes a consequence of low dopamine and serotonin.
If you struggle with cravings, try adding these foods into your diet for extra support.
While all of these foods are great additions to your diet, understanding what foods bring balance to your body is what will curb your cravings.
