I remember the day it hit me. Literally, my 1 year old was throwing things again and it hit me so hard. That was it, I had had enough!
My youngest was the most easy going baby ever. But one day, he turned into a monster. My sweet little boy had gone crazy. We were dumb-founded for four years watching him spiral out of control.
When he was five, a naturopath ran a test that showed his healthy diet was affecting his behaviour. I couldn’t believe that healthy foods had done this to him.
That’s the moment I realized nutrition wasn’t a one-size-fits-all. What determines which foods are “healthy” is not up to google (or in my case textbooks!), but your own body. If your body can’t breakdown, digest, or absorb a particular food – then it’s not healthy for you.
In other words, healthy food is not about what the food is, but what your body can do with it. And in this case, my son wasn’t able to do anything with many of the “healthy” foods I was feeding him.
So if you’re wondering why your “healthy” diet is giving you gas, it may be because of the foods you’re eating too.
Here are 3 ways that healthy foods may be the reason for your symptoms:
Food Sensitivities
When your body is missing or lacking the enzyme needed to break down a food, it can create a food sensitivity. This results in undigested food particles entering the digestive tract, which produces gas.
Food sensitivities left undiagnosed or unmanaged can cause your symptoms to get worse. This often leads to embarrassing and smelly gas.

Constipation
Did you know that a healthy digestive system has you pooping 1-3x daily? If you’re not pooping at least once a day, then your body is not digesting those “healthy” foods. This can cause toxins to build up in your body which produces gas.
By not addressing your constipation, gas will continue to build up in the abdomen. This can lead to very painful bloating and gas.

Inflammation
Certain foods can cause an immune-reaction in the gut, triggering inflammation. Sugar, wheat, dairy, or other food sensitivities are common inflammatory’s. While a little bit of inflammation is okay, too much can affect the lining of your gut.
This causes tiny junctions in the gut to open up and let large food particles into your blood stream. This can also produce uncomfortable and painful gas.

While some gas is normal, it shouldn’t affect your work life, social life, or personal life. When that happens, or it become smelly, embarrassing, more frequent, or painful – then it’s time to take action.
Remember that not all foods are healthy for you. Listen to your body, you know you best!
