How-To Get Your Picky Eaters to Eat Healthy!
Why is my kid so picky?
In case you didn’t know – your kids aren’t born picky eaters.
Nope, not at all.
They are created. Sad news, right?
1.We are 100% responsible for how our kids taste buds turn out
Yup.
The moment they start eating solid foods we have the opportunity to choose how their taste buds will be, the problem is we often make the wrong choice.
2. We give our kids whatever they want to eat.
Kids aren’t happy with what’s for dinner? Make them whatever they want, right?
That seems to be the parent motto these days.
I get that you are afraid they will starve themselves and be malnourished. But, I hate to break it to you, if they are eating an imbalanced diet of processed foods – they are malnourished.
Missing a meal won’t kill them … feeding them junk will.
3. Trust – they need something from you!
This cannot be overstated – if your kid feels like you don’t trust them, they will take it out on something they can control … like their food.
Stop over-scheduling them and micromanaging them and start an open dialogue about their life and their choices.
Work as a team!
How can I get them to eat?
The way to change your kids eating habits, is by changing your approach.
1.Change their taste buds.
Believe it or not – your taste buds are only alive for 10 days.
That’s it.
Ten. Days.
That means all you have to do is remove the processed food for two weeks and their taste buds will start to adjust.
Keep in mind, though, that healthy foods cannot compete with junk foods. You have to remove the junk in order that the taste bud will die (RIP junk taste bud) and feed them healthy foods while you develop the new taste bud.
Will they love it? Not at first.
Will they eventually eat? You betcha!
2. Consistency and smart choices, errrr’yday.
Consistency is key. Need I say more?
Feed them healthy foods and do it consistently. Change will be inevitable.
3. Rebuild the trust.
Let them make mistakes and be willing to give them opportunities to try it from another angle.
Listen, our kids are just trying to figure life out and by micromanaging it we take away their opportunity to learn.
Work to rebuild trust by working as a team to develop a plan that will satisfy you both.
Practical Tips
Here are some practical things you can do right now with your family to help manage your picky eaters.
Please remember – all of these need to be thought out, talked about and developed as a family unit if you want this to work. To have trust you need to be a team!
- Come up with a set of family tables rules that everyone agrees on
- Write out a family plan for how you will work on your health for the next two weeks. Once you reach that, set a new plan for the next two weeks (and so on and so forth!).
- Stop rewarding them with food, period.
- Establish trust with them by finding more ways to work as a team.
- Stay committed and stay consistent.
