Most people are curious as to what a nutritionist buys from the grocery store.
I know this first hand from having people stop me at the grocery store and go through my shopping cart. Whether it’s to judge me (hey, I’m not insulted!), or simply to figure out what healthy foods you should be including in your diet – taking a peek into my shopping cart isn’t such a bad idea.
Even though my shopping cart is never full of the same foods (and believe me, it’s always full), there are some foods that are in there every time.
Keep in mind that it is important to eat a variety of healthy foods to maximize the types of nutrients you are getting and minimize the possibility of nutrient deficiencies or toxicity. So, though this is a great starting point, make sure to switch this list up with other healthy foods as well!
Here are 10 foods I regularly buy from the grocery store:
KALE, SPINACH OR ARUGULA
These powerhouse greens are rich in nutrients like vitamins C, K, A, and potassium and iron. They also tend to boast a good portion of daily fibre to keep you regular. Plus, they are super versatile and great for chips (well, kale anyways), salads, juicing, or even soups.
APPLES
Low in sugar and high in fibre, these make a great snack (especially paired with a little nut butter!). They’re a great source of antioxidants helping to fight diseases and inflammation, while also boosting your immune system. I always keep my apple drawer stocked for an easy pick-me-up.
BLACK BEANS
Boasting 29g of fibre in just one cup, they are also a great source of protein, folate, magnesium, and iron – making them a great addition to your diet. They’re fun to use for burgers, brownies and work great on salads too. They’re great for vegetarians, but don’t work for some digestive issues.
QUINOA
One of the only vegetarian sources of complete protein, this is a must-add to your diet. This seed can be used for breakfast, lunch, or dinner and packs an impressive punch of over 17% of a women’s recommended protein intake in just one cup.
NUT BUTTERS
This offers endless possibilities to add (controlled, ahem) healthy fats to your diet. Whenever you finish a jar, be sure to purchase a new variety the next time because every nut and seed has different benefits. You’ll never find the same nut butter in my grocery haul each week!
HERBAL TEAS
This is my evening ritual to relax, hydrate and prevent evening snacking. Green tea is a favourite of mine because it has lots of antioxidants to help combat sickness, disease, and even recover from exercise. There are so many different varieties of non-caffeinated herbal teas – you won’t even miss dessert.
PLAIN YOGURT
This is only allowed in your shopping cart if purchased correctly. It has to be plain – no if’s, and’s or but’s about it. You also want to check the ingredients to make sure it is labelled with active bacteria culture. Those are the good bacteria’s that protect your gut and fight off disease. Believe me, yogurt isn’t beneficial without it.
BEETS
Vitamin C, fibre, manganese, and potassium are just some of the nutritional benefits of beets. Sweet or crunchy, raw, or cooked, plain or seasoned, even fermented – they’re great whichever way you like them. They’re worth adding in for liver support, detox, and a boost to the immune system.
BANANAS
Though not all nutritionists agree on bananas, I am a huge advocate for eating them in moderation. My main argument would be their potassium levels. Most people only need half a banana and I recommend them for people who are fairly active or during hot days where you need extra hydration.
LEMONS
Like bananas, they are an electrolyte powerhouse. Think of electrolytes like little taxis on the highway of your body, taking water every place it needs to go. Talk about vital for life! They are also a great digestive aid. I love starting my morning off with lemon in hot water or in my homemade green juice.
While there are many things purchased during my grocery haul’s, these are some of my regulars that you’ll spy when peeking into my shopping cart. If you’re curious if these would work for your gut health or other health goals, contact me for a FREE 15 minute mini-consultation and let’s chat!
