Loose poops are your body’s natural defense against toxins.
Diarrhea is a symptom of an irritation or imbalance of the gut and causes your poops to be watery and occur more often per day than your usual bowel movements (normal is 1-3 times per day).
It can also be accompanied by urgency with elimination, cramping or abdominal pain, and fatigue or brain fog.
But your poops aren’t supposed to be loose (you can learn more about what a healthy poop looks like here) and diarrhea needs to be looked it as a symptom and the root cause should be addressed.
Some common causes of diarrhea are:
- food allergies or sensitivities
- impaired digestion or absorption
- gut bacteria imbalance
- stress or anxiety
- infection
- food poisoning
- troubles digesting fats
While discovering the cause of diarrhea is important, it’s also an uncomfortable and embarrassing symptom to have (I’ve been there, trust me!).
Here are 8 of the most effective ways I’ve found to manage it when it shows up:
- Avoid dairy, fats, sugar, and excess meat
- Eat the BRAT diet – bananas, rice, apples, a toast
- Hydrate by drinking lots of water with fresh lemon
- Take a good quality probiotic
- Drink teas that contain red raspberry, mint, slippery elm, nettle, or cinnamon.
- Consume bone broth or vegetable broth
- Take a digestive enzyme to help break down your meals
- Use blueberry juice, black currant juice, or aloe vera juice (2-4 ounces)
If diarrhea persists for more than a few days, there are some tests that can be done to help determine the root cause:
- IgG Food Sensitivity test or E95 Food Allergy test
- Comprehensive Stool Analysis (candida and parasites)
- Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth testing (SIBO)
- Lactose intolerance testing
Your poop gives critical insight to your gut health.
If you’re struggling with loose poops and they aren’t sorting out quickly using the tips above, then book in a consultation and let me help you find the root cause!
